This post is part 19 of a series of stories recounting all the ups and downs of my ~6 year journey around the world to all seven continents and seven seas.

After a month on the Freedom I was transferred to the Navigator where I traded a contract extension in exchange for a highly coveted itinerary with the Serenade.

For the majority of the 2018 summer season, I had the privilege of sailing through the Baltics, Scandinavia, the Arctic Circle, and Russia with an epic transatlantic crossing that included Royal Caribbean’s maiden voyage to Greenland.

It was an itinerary and contract I often look back on and think, “Those were the days.”

Nearly every cruise we were in St. Petersburg for 3-4 straight days and we were lucky enough to be there during the FIFA World Cup.

We were even docked close enough to the stadium where games were being held.

On one particular night, I was walking across the open deck when I heard the faint sound of cheering coming from land.

I looked over toward the stadium to see the colorful lights going off, presumably because of a goal.

A few seconds later, I could hear the entire ship’s pool deck viewing party going crazy as they’d just seen the TV footage that was happening mere miles away.

It was surreal.

No matter what time I finished work, I ran off the ship for a stroll.

Maybe it was due to the World Cup, international fans, or festivities, but I never got the sense that the city was dangerous or unfriendly.

When asked which place I’ve been surprised by, my answer is usually St. Petersburg.

Russia is extraordinarily big and unfortunately, I couldn’t explore more of the country, but getting to be in St. Petersburg three to four days every week definitely changed a lot of preconceived notions I’d had.

For many friends I’ve discussed this with, myself included, Russia just never seemed to be on our tourist radar.

However, now I’d put it in my Top 5 must-visit destinations for so many reasons.

The architecture, especially of palaces, is absolutely stunning.

Getting around on the metro is so convenient and easy to use.

Ridesharing was common so I never had any issues finding a ride when needed.

Food options were not only solid but so delicious and well priced.

Nightlife entertainment (at the time) was just as lively as other big cities.

And those sunsets were out. of. this. world.
