Must-Visit Islands Close to Playa del Carmen

1. Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres

Easily one of my favorite destinations in the world (and I’ve been to all seven continents!), Isla Mujeres is what you see when you dream of the perfect beach.

A 30-minute ferry ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a colorful island with electric-blue waters like you’ve never seen and drop-dead gorgeous sunsets.

This laid back bubble of a town offers an experience and atmosphere unique to the area, including golf carts being one of the main modes of transportation and brightly painted multi-chromatic buildings and homes that turn the island into a giant outdoor art gallery.

Where to stay in Isla Mujeres: Mia Reef Isla Mujeres All Inclusive, Casa Azul Maya, Nomads Hotel and Beachclub

Where to Go: Playa Norte

No visit to Isla Mujeres would be complete without some time spent at Playa Norte, voted the number one beach in Mexico in 2020 by TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards and consistently ranking as one of the top 25 beaches in the world every year since at least 2017.

The calm waters, soft white sand, and fiery sunsets aren’t to be missed.

2. Cozumel

One of Mexico’s largest islands and the popular port of call for cruise ships (and a heavy favorite among crew members), Cozumel can be as touristy or laid back as you want.

About a 40-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen, there’s something for everyone on the island of Cozumel.

Where to Start: Downtown

The downtown area where the ferry terminal is and where cruise ships dock as well is full of shopping opportunities and a number of delicious restaurants and bars.

You’ll also be able to find taxis and vehicle rentals in this area too.

3. Holbox

Holbox is a hidden gem that takes a bit of effort to get to, but will not disappoint.

Getting to Holbox takes approximately a two-hour bus ride from Playa del Carmen to the port of Chilquila, and another 30-minute ferry ride to the island.

There are so many things to do in Isla Holbox for nature lovers.

It’s home to a number of native wildlife species, including flamingos, and because of the many logistical limitations, Holbox offers a truly authentic getaway experience on the beach with only the simplest of amenities.

What to Do

If you go to Holbox, be sure to check out the beaches at night.

During certain periods of the year when the water is warmer, a unique phenomenon turns the beaches into neon blue.

Bioluminescence, as this event is called, occurs in Holbox because of thousands of microorganisms producing a compound that creates light similar to jellyfishes or fireflies.

Where to stay in Holbox: Villas Caracol, Beachfront Hotel La Palapa- Adults Only, Tikul Hotel Boutique, Casa Chujuk

Designated one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichén Itzá is a tourist staple in the area.

While the large central pyramid called the Kukulkan Pyramid is the most iconic and recognizable feature of the site, the area includes other ruins and exhibits to check out.

Chichén Itzá is a good three hours’ drive away from Playa del Carmen, but it’s a trip many travelers make, both within Mexico and from abroad, to visit the historic landmark.

Coba is another Mayan archeological site that up until 2020, you were able to climb the main pyramid.

The village is tucked away in the jungle, so you’ll definitely feel like Indiana Jones walking or bicycling through the dirt paths, checking out the preserved huts and ball courts along the way.

A trip from Playa del Carmen to Coba will take around 1.5-2 hours.
